What AI Detector Is Most Similar to Turnitin?
11 min read
No public AI detector has been shown to match Turnitin’s results. If you are wondering what AI detector is most similar to Turnitin, the honest answer is that none can predict your Turnitin score, because Turnitin does not publish its model and students usually reach it only through their school.
The best free option for a second opinion is Phrasly’s AI Detector. It is free with unlimited checks on a free account, scans up to 10,000 words at a time and highlights the sentences that read as AI-written, so you know what to review before you submit.

What Does "Similar to Turnitin" Actually Mean?
When people call an AI detector similar to Turnitin, they can mean three different things. It reaches the same verdict on the same essay, it offers comparable features, or it is simply open to students before submission. Only the first is about results, and only a documented side-by-side comparison with Turnitin can prove it.
Here is what each one means:
Similar Decisions: The detector labels the same essays the way Turnitin does. This is what most people mean by the AI detector most similar to Turnitin.
Similar Features: Sentence highlights, downloadable reports or LMS integrations. Many of these tools appear in the list of AI detectors universities use, but shared features do not mean shared verdicts.
Similar Access: The tool is available to you before you submit. Turnitin usually is not, since students reach it through their school.
Accuracy is a fourth, separate question. Two detectors can agree and both be wrong, or disagree when one of them is right. So a headline accuracy claim cannot show which tool is closest to Turnitin.
Our guide to AI detection accuracy explains how they are tested.
Which AI Detector Is Closest to Turnitin in Published Tests?
No independent published test has shown any public AI detector matching Turnitin’s verdicts. The few comparisons that exist were run by detector companies on their own tools, so they cannot settle the question. Turnitin does not let outside tools test against it at scale, which makes a neutral comparison hard to run.
So treat any claim that one tool is “closest to Turnitin” with caution until an independent study backs it up. The questions below help you judge any comparison you come across.
💡 Before you trust any answer to which AI detector is closest to Turnitin, ask:
1. Did the test use writing like yours, such as student essays in your language?
2. Did it include both human and AI-written text?
3. Has the tool been updated since the test? If its model or settings changed, the results may no longer hold.
How Do AI Detectors Like Turnitin Compare?
AI detectors like Turnitin share its goal of spotting AI writing, but none has been shown to give the same scores. Turnitin reaches students only through their schools, so the tools below work best as pre-checks, each with its own labels and reports.
This is not a ranking of matching Turnitin scores. Features below were checked on each vendor's own page on October 8, 2026.
Detector | Practical role | What its output means |
Turnitin | Reference system that schools license | Share of qualifying long-form prose likely AI-generated; results from 1% to 19% show as *% |
Originality.ai | Detector with adjustable AI Allowance settings | Likely Original or Likely AI, with a confidence level |
Phrasly | Free second opinion while drafting, no signup | AI and human percentages; sentence highlights for signed-in users |
GPTZero | Public scans plus Writing Replay for Google Docs | Likelihood that text is AI, mixed or human |
Copyleaks | Public scans up to 25,000 characters without login; LMS integrations | AI percentage with AI and human word counts |
Pangram | Free daily checks after signup | Human, AI or AI-assisted label |
Winston AI | Quick scans, free trial, shareable reports | AI likelihood with a downloadable report |

Which Free AI Detector Can You Use Before Turnitin?
A free AI detector is still a useful pre-check before Turnitin. Phrasly’s AI Detector is free, needs no signup and works with as few as 50 words. GPTZero and Copyleaks offer free public scans too. Just keep in mind that no free AI detector similar to Turnitin has been shown to give the same results.
When choosing a free AI detector, look at these four points:
Access: You can use it today, without a school login or a paid plan.
Language and Length: The tool supports the language your essay is written in and accepts its full length. Phrasly, for example, works with English, Spanish, French and German. Scan the whole essay, not a few isolated sentences, because short samples give less reliable results.
Clear Explanation: The result shows which sentences raised the score, not just one number. Phrasly's AI Detector shows sentence highlights once you sign in for free, so you know exactly which lines to review.
Privacy: You know how the tool handles and stores your text. Before you paste a full essay, read is it safe to paste your essay into an AI detector.
If your school offers its own draft check, ask your instructor which report you can see and how it will be used.
Why Don't AI Detector Percentages Match Turnitin's?
AI detector percentages rarely match Turnitin's because each tool measures something different, so a low score elsewhere does not promise a low Turnitin score. Turnitin's AI percentage covers the long-form prose it can assess, separate from its similarity score. Other tools report confidence levels or labels, using their own models, settings, length limits and languages.
Three differences explain most of the gap:
Different Meanings: Turnitin's AI report shows "the percentage of qualifying text likely generated by AI," according to its guide to AI writing detection. Its similarity score is a separate number that shows text matching other sources. Other detectors may give a confidence level or one label for the whole document instead.
Different Inputs: Turnitin only creates an AI report for 300 to 30,000 words of long-form prose in English, Spanish, Japanese or Arabic, according to its file requirements. A short paste into a free tool is a different input, so its score cannot stand in for Turnitin's.
Different Models: Every company trains its own detector. AI detection is still often described as "perplexity and burstiness," but GPTZero says it has moved to a deep-learning based architecture. Two tools using the same words on a results page does not mean they share a classifier.
⚠️ An asterisk is not zero. Turnitin shows results from 1% to 19% as *%, with no number or highlights, "to avoid potential incidences of false positives," according to its help article on the *% score. Neither that display nor any boundary a study uses to sort essays creates a safe percentage. See how much AI detection is acceptable for what a score can and cannot tell you.
🧪 What We Saw When Four Detectors Read the Same Texts
On October 8, 2026, we scanned four texts on the same topic in four public detectors. The texts were:
a 572-word essay written by one of our writers
a 534-word essay from ChatGPT
a 605-word version of the human essay, lightly edited by ChatGPT
a 181-word excerpt of the human essay
We ran Phrasly on our paid team account (Model 7.0), GPTZero on its free plan (Model 4.1o), Copyleaks' public tool at its default sensitivity, and Originality.ai's public checker at its default 15% setting. Turnitin was not part of this test.
Sample | Phrasly | GPTZero | Copyleaks | Originality.ai (15% setting) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Human essay | 14% AI, likely human | 100% human | 0% AI | Likely Original, 100% confidence |
ChatGPT essay | 100% AI | 100% AI | 100% AI | Likely AI, 100% confidence |
Human essay, AI-polished | 45% AI, likely AI | 100% human | 0% AI | Likely Original, 53% confidence |
181-word human excerpt | 10% AI, likely human | 100% human | 0% AI | Likely Original, 100% confidence |
All four tools labeled the ChatGPT essay as AI, and none labeled the human essay or excerpt as AI. They split on the AI-polished essay. Phrasly marked 14 of its 30 sentences as AI, and GPTZero and Copyleaks called it fully human. Originality.ai called it likely original, but with 53% confidence instead of 100%. Because that essay mixes human writing with AI editing, the test cannot say which tool read it correctly.
All four also scored the 181-word excerpt, even though Turnitin would not report on text that short. This shows disagreement between public tools, not which one agrees with Turnitin. For more on why scores split, read why AI detectors give different results.

Need Another View of Your Draft?
Run your draft through Phrasly and look at which sentences it flags, not only the overall number. If you use more than one detector, read each result on its own rather than combining the scores.
How Should You Check Your Essay Before a Turnitin Submission?

Check your essay with whatever your school provides first, such as a draft submission in Turnitin, and ask your instructor what that report shows. If you have no school tool, scan the whole essay in one detector that fits it, read each flag in context, change only what you can explain, and keep every draft.
There is no single best AI detector for matching Turnitin, because none has been shown to match its results.
The best AI checker for Turnitin prep is one whose limits you understand and whose length and language rules your draft meets.
With that in mind, follow these five steps:
Read the AI Policy: Find out what kind of AI help your course allows and whether you need to disclose it.
Keep Your Writing Process: Save your outline, notes, drafts and version history, plus a record of any AI help your instructor allowed.
Choose a Tool Your Draft Fits: Use your school's draft check if it has one. If not, pick a detector that supports your essay's language and length. Remove details you do not need to share, such as your name or student ID.
Read Flags in Context: A flagged passage is a reason to look again, not a signal to rewrite every formal sentence.
Make Justified Edits Only: Keep the original and the edited version, and note what you changed and why.
Running the same text through more and more detectors does not improve your essay. Only the writing and review steps do.Human writing can be flagged, and a low result does not prove that a person wrote the text.
Our guide to AI detector false positives explains how to protect yourself. Research points the same way: the September 2026 version of the GEDE study by Gehring and Paaßen found that detectors had trouble classifying human-written texts that students had improved with an AI model.
Where Does an AI Humanizer Fit?
An AI humanizer belongs at the editing stage as an optional step, and only if your school or instructor permits that help. Run part of your own draft through it to see clearer phrasing, then confirm that meaning, names, figures and citations survived. It cannot guarantee a lower Turnitin score or prove that you wrote the essay.
Treat the output as a suggestion, not a finished draft. Keep your original, compare the two versions sentence by sentence, and accept only the changes that still say what you meant.
If your assignment does not allow this kind of help, revise by hand instead. If an instructor is already asking about your work, do not edit the version you submitted. Keep it exactly as it is.
Make Permitted Edits Sound Like You
Pick a passage you are allowed to revise and see how it reads with clearer wording. Review meaning, names, numbers and citations before you keep any change.
Guests get one free humanization of 15 to 500 words, and ongoing use needs a paid plan. No rewrite can guarantee a Turnitin result.
What Should You Do When AI Detectors Disagree?
When AI detectors disagree, treat it as a reason to check the scans, not to pick a winner. Make sure every tool read the same version, then compare scan dates, settings, length limits and what each number measures. If an instructor raises a concern, bring your drafts, notes and sources, and ask which passages need explaining.
If an AI detector says your writing is AI and you wrote it yourself, take these steps:
Check the Same Version: Make sure every tool scanned the same text from the same draft, with or without the title and headings in each case.
Compare Settings and Definitions: Note each tool's settings and whether its number is an AI share, a confidence level or a label.
Gather Process Evidence: Collect your drafts, notes, sources and version history.
Ask What the Concern Covers: Find out which passages and which policy the concern is about.
Request a Review of the Evidence: Ask your instructor to look at your process, not only the score.
A report from another detector can support that conversation, but it cannot settle it. If Turnitin has flagged your own work, read why Turnitin flags human writing as AI.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Free AI Detector Is Most Similar to Turnitin?
No free AI detector has been shown to match Turnitin, but Phrasly’s AI Detector is the best free option for a second opinion. It offers unlimited checks on a free account and highlights the sentences that read as AI. Like any outside tool, its score comes from its own model and cannot predict your Turnitin report.
Is GPTZero the Same as Turnitin?
No. GPTZero is run by a different company and uses its own model, scoring and writing-process features. Both tools look for AI writing, yet they can reach different verdicts on the same essay. To see how it performs, read how accurate GPTZero is.
What AI Detector Does Turnitin Use?
Turnitin uses an AI writing detection model it built itself, as its official guidance explains. A result from GPTZero, Copyleaks or Phrasly comes from a different service, not from Turnitin. For more on how its model handles chatbot text, see our answer to does Turnitin detect ChatGPT.
Is Turnitin's AI Detector Free for Students?
Not as a personal product. Turnitin says it "does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions," so students usually reach it only through their school. Any free AI detector you find online is a separate tool, not a free version of Turnitin.
Is Turnitin's AI Score the Same as Its Similarity Score?
No. The similarity score shows how much of your text matches other sources. The AI score estimates how much of the qualifying prose looks AI-generated. They are separate numbers, so a high or low result on one does not predict the other.
Will a Low AI Score on Another Detector Mean a Low Turnitin Score?
No. Another detector runs its own model with its own settings and scoring rules, and Turnitin only scores qualifying prose of at least 300 words. A low result elsewhere is a useful second opinion on your draft, but it is not a forecast of your Turnitin score.
Can an AI Humanizer Guarantee Turnitin Won't Flag My Essay?
No. A rewrite cannot promise any detector result, and it cannot show who wrote the text. Use editing tools only where your course permits them, hold on to your original draft, and tell your instructor about AI help whenever the rules require it.
