9 Best AI Detectors in 2026: AI Checker Tools Tested for Accuracy
19 min read
The best AI checker in 2026 is a tie. Phrasly and Pangram each caught all 11 of our AI samples and wrongly flagged none of our 5 human ones. Scribbr and QuillBot caught 3 of 11. We tested nine AI text detectors and AI content detection tools on the same 16 samples.
Paste one essay into an AI checker and you get 12%. Paste it into another and you get 88%. That gap is what this article measures.
Every tool got the same 16 samples on the same day, with the same settings and one attempt each. AI text came from GPT-5.6, Claude Opus 5 and Gemini 3. This post covers accuracy, false positives, free limits, and which AI checker fits your situation.
🔎 Disclosure: Phrasly publishes this comparison and is one of the nine tools tested, on the same samples as every rival.

💡 Did You Know: Phrasly gives you 5,000 words a check on a free signed-in account, so most essays go through in one scan. You get three checks before a free account is needed, and highlighting turns on once you sign in.
Quick Verdict: What Is the Best AI Checker in 2026?
For academic grading, pick a detector that shows which sentences triggered the score. Pangram and Phrasly both caught all 11 AI samples and flagged none of the 5 human ones. No tool in our test produced a single false positive, so catch rate did the separating.

How We Tested These AI Detection Tools

We built 16 samples of 300 to 600 words each and ran every one through all nine tools on the same day, in September 2026. Each tool judged the same text with its default settings.
The 16 samples break down like this:
✍️ 5 human-written: pre-2022 public-domain text and our own unpublished notes.
🤖 5 fully AI: two from GPT-5.6, two from Claude Opus 5, one from Gemini 3.
📝 3 lightly edited AI: AI drafts with a human pass for wording and order.
🔁 3 paraphrased AI: AI drafts pushed through a paraphrasing tool.
For each sample we recorded the AI percentage and whether the verdict was right.
We judged every tool on accuracy, false-positive rate, ease of use, reporting clarity, and practical value, and noted the free limit, signup, languages, highlighting and speed that day.
⚠️ One test day, one attempt per sample, no re-runs. Re-scanning until a tool produces a nicer number breaks the comparison.
The 9 AI Checker Tools Reviewed
All nine reviews use the same template, so no tool gets more space than another.

Verdict: Tied for first, and the most institution-ready option here. Our Pangram AI detector review goes deeper on its scoring.
3. GPTZero

Our test result: 9 of 11 AI samples caught.
False positives: 0 of 5 human samples flagged.
Mixed and paraphrased: 4 of 6 caught.

Strengths: Sentence-level highlighting, paraphrase detection on the free plan, and a writing-history feature that shows how a document was typed. Covers GPT, Claude, Gemini and Llama.
Limitations: The monthly word budget runs out quickly on long documents.
Best for: Teachers who want evidence of how a draft was written, not only a score.
Verdict: Third on catches, and GPTZero publishes more about its own testing than most rivals.
4. Originality ai

Our test result: 9 of 11 AI samples caught.
False positives: 0 of 5 human samples flagged.
Mixed and paraphrased: 4 of 6 caught.

Verdict: Level with GPTZero on catches, and the best fit when originality and AI authorship both matter.
5. Copyleaks

Our test result: 6 of 11 AI samples caught.
False positives: 0 of 5 human samples flagged.
Mixed and paraphrased: 1 of 6 caught.
Free limit and price: 25,000 characters of AI detection without signing in. Personal is $16.99 a month, or $13.99 a month billed annually, for 100 credits.

Verdict: The widest language coverage here, and the sharpest drop once AI text is edited.
6. Scribbr AI Detector

Our test result: 3 of 11 AI samples caught.
False positives: 0 of 5 human samples flagged.
Mixed and paraphrased: 1 of 6 caught.
Free limit and price: Unlimited free checks at up to 1,200 words each, with no account. The detector itself has no paid tier.
Strengths: Paragraph-level feedback, and it separates AI-generated text from AI-refined text. Covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
Limitations: Only English, Spanish, German and French. Scribbr states that its own research found the best free tool reached 68% accuracy.
Best for: Students checking a chapter at a time for free.
Verdict: Last on catches, and honest about its limits. Our Scribbr AI detector review tested it on its own.
7. QuillBot AI Detector

Our test result: 3 of 11 AI samples caught.
False positives: 0 of 5 human samples flagged.
Mixed and paraphrased: 1 of 6 caught.
Free limit and price: Up to 1,200 words a scan and 6 scans a day with a free account. Premium removes both limits.
Strengths: Over 20 languages, explainer cards that say why a passage was flagged, and a stated design choice to call unclear text human.
Limitations: Six scans a day is tight. Its scores matched Scribbr on 15 of our 16 samples, because Scribbr runs on QuillBot technology.
Best for: Writers who want to know which phrases read as machine-written.
Verdict: The clearest explanations of the free tools, and the same weak catch rate as Scribbr.
8. Winston AI

Our test result: 8 of 11 AI samples caught.
False positives: 0 of 5 human samples flagged.
Mixed and paraphrased: 4 of 6 caught.

Verdict: Fifth on catches, with reporting built for people who have to justify a decision.
9. ZeroGPT

Our test result: 6 of 11 AI samples caught.
False positives: 0 of 5 human samples flagged.
Mixed and paraphrased: 2 of 6 caught.

Strengths: No signup, highlighted sentences, automatic PDF reports, and batch file upload on paid plans. Covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
Limitations: ZeroGPT does not publish independent testing behind its accuracy claims, and copycat sites use near-identical names.
Best for: A fast second opinion when you have no account anywhere.
Verdict: Mid-table on catches, lowest friction to use, and the one to pair with a second tool.
🏫 Turnitin is not on this list, and you cannot buy it. Schools and universities license it; individuals cannot. Its own guides state that a July 2026 model update holds a document false-positive rate under 1%. If your school runs it, your score comes from a tool you never see. Read what an institution pays in our guide to Turnitin AI detection cost.

What Is the Best Free AI Content Detector in 2026?
The best free AI checker is the one whose free limit fits your document. A 3,000-word essay fits in one Phrasly check, one ZeroGPT check, or three Scribbr checks.
Tool | Free word or character limit | Signup? | Price of paid tier | Best free use |
Phrasly | 5,000 words per check, signed in | ❌ for first 3 checks | Detector is free | A complete essay in one scan |
Scribbr | 1,200 words, unlimited checks | ❌ | No paid detector tier | Chapter-by-chapter checking |
ZeroGPT | 15,000 characters per check | ❌ | Loads in browser, check live | A fast anonymous second opinion |
2,000 words, 3 scans a day | ❌ | $14.95/mo, $12.95/mo annual | Spot-checking a freelance draft | |
Copyleaks | 25,000 characters | ❌ | $16.99/mo, $13.99/mo annual | Non-English text |
QuillBot | 1,200 words, 6 scans a day | ✅ | $8.33/mo billed annually | Seeing which phrases read as AI |
Pangram | 2,000 words a day | ✅ | $20/mo, 300,000 words | Trying institutional-grade output |
GPTZero | 10,000 words a month | ✅ | Loads in browser, check live | Checking a few short papers |
Winston AI | 2,000 credits, 14 days only | ✅ | $18/mo, $120/yr | Trialling report exports |
Free AI checker limits and paid entry prices, checked September 2026 on each vendor's own pages. Pricing is accurate as of the date this article was written and is subject to change. Confirm the current price on the tool's official pricing page before purchasing. Checked September 2026 on each vendor's own pages.
💡 Full essay in one go? Phrasly takes 5,000 words a check and ZeroGPT only 15,000 characters. QuillBot, Scribbr and Originality.ai cap a free check at 1,200 to 2,000 words.
The Most Accurate AI Text Detector in 2026
For academic use, the most accurate AI detection tools in our test were Phrasly and Pangram, tied at 11 of 11. GPTZero and Originality.ai followed at 9, then Winston AI at 8. Scribbr and QuillBot finished last at 3.
No tool produced a false positive. All nine cleared our five human samples, and the highest score any honest paragraph received was 14%. That result comes from five samples of long-form essay prose, so read it as a clean pass on this test rather than proof that wrong flags do not happen.
The real separator was edited text. Every tool caught the five untouched AI samples. Once those drafts were edited by hand or paraphrased, Copyleaks, Scribbr and QuillBot each caught one of six, while Phrasly and Pangram caught all six.
No single accuracy percentage travels across tools, because each company tests on its own samples. The RAID benchmark from the Association for Computational Linguistics is the shared test that changed this. QuillBot's page cites RAID for a 99% detection rate. The RAID paper itself found that detectors are fooled by paraphrasing, unusual sampling settings, and models they were never trained on.
📊 Pew Research Center analyzed 10,000 English webpages collected in July 2026 and found 10% show significant signs of AI authorship. Among pages published after ChatGPT's release, that rises to over a third. Source: Pew Research Center, August 2026.
The Most Reliable AI Checker
The most reliable AI checker is the one that admits uncertainty. Every score is a probability, not a verdict. Reliability comes down to what a tool does with an uncertain case. Turnitin withholds a score below 20% rather than publish a number it distrusts. QuillBot states that unclear text gets called human. Both trade caught AI for fewer wrong accusations.
Why Phrasly Is the Best Choice for Detecting AI Content

Phrasly is the best choice when you need a long document checked for free. It tied with Pangram on every measure and allows 5,000 words a check against Pangram's 2,000 a day. A 4,000-word essay takes two days on Pangram and one scan here.
A clean sweep on 16 samples does not mean a tool never misses. Weigh numbers you can re-run above any claim we make about them.
Best AI Checker by Use Case
Best AI Checker for Students
Students need one free check that swallows a whole essay. Phrasly and ZeroGPT do that; Scribbr and QuillBot split long work into parts. Run AI checkers before you submit, not after a professor asks. Our roundup of free AI checkers for students compares what each free tier actually allows.
Professors and Educators
Educators need highlighting and an audit trail more than a headline percentage. Pangram, GPTZero, Copyleaks and Turnitin all mark the sentences behind the score. If your school uses a platform, check what it already runs before adding a tool. Our guide on can professors detect ChatGPT covers what teaching staff see, and what AI detector Edgenuity uses shows how one platform wired detection in.
Content Creators and SEO Teams
Publishers care about volume and about what a client will accept as proof. Originality.ai and Winston AI both produce shareable reports across batches of files. Our ranking of the best AI detector for copywriters covers the agency workflow. Google's own guidance rewards content made for people, whatever produced it.
Enterprises
Large teams need API access and predictable costs. Copyleaks, Winston AI, Originality.ai, GPTZero and Pangram all sell API plans.
Private and Confidential Documents
Scribbr states plainly that it does not store or share submissions, which answers the question of which AI checker does not store submitted text. Winston AI publishes its data-handling answers in its help pages, and Pangram states it does not train on student data. Read the vendor privacy page before pasting confidential work, because the default differs by tool. Your writing platform may also be checking: see does Google Docs have AI detection.
Multilingual Content
The best multilingual AI detector is Copyleaks, with AI detection in 30 languages and plagiarism checks in over 100. Pangram and QuillBot each cover more than 20 languages. Originality.ai covers 30. Scribbr covers four: English, Spanish, German and French.
How to Interpret an AI Detection Score
Yes, an AI detector can wrongly flag human writing, most often with formal, structured, or non-native English prose. Even a sub-1% error rate means one flagged paper in every hundred honest ones. Treat the number as a signal.
Here is what to do with a score you did not expect:
👀 Read the highlighted sentences first. A score with no highlights tells you nothing you can act on.
🔁 Run a second tool before any decision that affects a grade or a job.
📄 Keep your drafts and version history. They answer the question a score cannot.
🚫 Never treat one score as proof. No tool sees who typed the words.
Should you trust one AI detector score? No. Two tools disagreeing on the same paragraph is normal, because each was trained on different text. Our guide on what triggers an AI detector explains which habits raise a score on writing you did yourself.
Got a score you did not expect? Check the same text against a second tool. 👇
What Is an AI Checker and How Does It Work?
An AI checker is a tool that reads text and estimates whether a human or an AI system wrote it. These tools evaluate multiple signals such as sentence structure, predictability, burstiness, and linguistic patterns commonly found in AI-generated content.
Two words explain most of the scoring. Perplexity measures how surprising each next word is; AI writing tends to pick the expected word. Burstiness measures how much sentence length varies; human writing varies more.
A modern AI content checker does not simply label content as "AI" or "human." Instead, it provides probability scores, highlights suspicious sections, and explains why certain passages may appear AI-generated. That context is what makes a fair decision possible.
AI detection and plagiarism checking answer different questions. A plagiarism checker compares your text against a database of existing sources. An AI checker compares your text against patterns, with no database involved. Our explainer on AI checker vs AI detector covers where the names overlap.
Why AI Detection Matters in 2026
AI writing is now normal in classrooms and in publishing, which is why the checks moved from optional to routine.
🎓 Academic integrity: schools need a consistent way to review submitted work.
✅ Content quality: publishers verify what contributors send before it goes live.
📋 Compliance and disclosure: clients and platforms increasingly ask how a draft was produced.
📈 Pew Research Center surveyed 1,458 US teens in late 2025 and reported that 54% have used AI chatbots for schoolwork. A majority, 59%, think students at their school use chatbots to cheat at least sometimes. Source: Pew Research Center, February 2026.
What Makes an AI Checker Tool Reliable?

A reliable AI content checker gets five things right, and each one maps to a column in the comparison table above.
🎯 Accuracy: how often the verdict matches the truth, on AI text and on human text.
⚡ Speed: results in seconds rather than minutes.
🖱️ Ease of use: paste, scan, read, with no setup.
🌍 Language support: four languages or thirty, depending on the tool.
📦 Real-time or batch: one document at a time, or a folder of them.
Read our breakdown of how AI detectors work for the mechanics underneath these five.
Test all five factors on your own writing in one scan. 👇
Pick your AI detector by the document in front of you. A long essay needs a generous free cap, a class set needs an LMS link, and a client report needs a PDF someone else can read.
Whatever you choose, two scores that agree are worth more than one score that is high. Our roundup of the best AI content detector tools lists the free options, and our guide on whether colleges check for AI covers what schools run.
FAQs
How accurate are AI checkers in 2026?
Accuracy ranges widely and no number travels between tools. Each company tests on its own samples, so a 99% claim describes that company's test. In ours, results ranged from 3 to 11 AI samples caught out of 11. Always read the highlighted sentences, not only the percentage.
Can AI checkers detect hybrid AI and human content?
Sometimes. Mixed writing is the hardest case, because edited AI loses the patterns detectors look for. In our test the spread ran from 6 of 6 down to 1 of 6. See AI checker vs AI detector for how the terms differ.
Are AI detection tools easy to use?
Yes. Paste text, press scan, read the result. Phrasly, Scribbr, ZeroGPT and Originality.ai need no account for a first check. Pangram, QuillBot and Winston AI require signup before you scan.
Can Phrasly check non-English content?
Yes. Phrasly's detector accepts text in languages other than English. For the widest published language coverage, Copyleaks lists AI detection in 30 languages and Pangram lists over 20.
Is Phrasly suitable for large-scale analysis?
Yes, for document-by-document work up to 5,000 words a check. Batch upload and API access come from Copyleaks, Winston AI and Originality.ai. Our Phrasly AI review covers the detector in more detail.
What support does Phrasly provide?
Phrasly offers customer support through its website, along with tool guides and blog explainers. The detector itself needs no setup: paste your text, scan, and read the highlighted sentences.
How does Phrasly protect my content and privacy?
Phrasly processes the text you paste to produce a score. Signed-in users get a scan history they can delete. Read the current privacy page before submitting confidential work, since data-handling terms change.
What is the most accurate AI detector?
Phrasly and Pangram tied in our September 2026 test, each catching 11 of 11 AI samples. GPTZero and Originality.ai caught 9. Vendor claims run higher, and each is measured on that vendor's own samples.
Which AI checker has the lowest false-positive rate?
All nine tied at zero. None of them flagged any of our 5 human samples, and the highest score an honest paragraph got was 14%. Turnitin states a document false-positive rate under 1%, though schools license it and students cannot buy it.
Can AI detectors identify GPT-5.6, Claude Opus 5 and Gemini 3?
Yes, with caveats. Originality.ai, QuillBot, Copyleaks, Pangram and ZeroGPT all name current models on their pages. Detection weakens as soon as the output is paraphrased or edited, whichever model produced it.
Is Phrasly AI Detector accurate?
In our test it caught 11 of 11 AI samples with zero false positives, tying with Pangram. Phrasly's own pages claim 99.8% accuracy, which is a company figure. Phrasly publishes this article, so weigh the measured numbers above the marketing one.
Does this article cover AI image or AI Mode detection?
No. This article covers AI text detection only. Detecting AI-generated images, and optimizing for Google's AI Mode, are separate topics with separate tools.
