Turnitin vs GPTZero (2026): Access, Accuracy and Which One to Use
15 min read
This Turnitin vs GPTZero guide is written for two readers: students checking a paper before handing it in, and teachers deciding which tool to license.
To see how GPTZero handles real writing, we ran it on three samples that range from fully human to fully AI-written. We also ran Phrasly's AI Detector, our own free checker, on the same samples as a second opinion. For Turnitin, we relied on its own documentation and published studies.
The sections below compare one factor at a time, such as accuracy or privacy, and the final section gives a pick for your role. If you only need a fast pre-check, use the tool below or the alternatives page linked at the end.
Check Your Own Draft Before You Submit It π
Who Can Actually Use Turnitin vs GPTZero
Students can check an essay with GPTZero before submitting it to Turnitin, but they can't open Turnitin themselves. Turnitin sells only to schools and organizations, while GPTZero lets anyone create an account the same day. Turnitin's help center says it directly: "Turnitin does not sell individual licenses or single-use subscriptions."
Turnitin: Institution Licensed, No Public Sign Up
Turnitin access depends entirely on your school's contract, and no individual checkout exists. Most students reach Turnitin through an LTI integration, a standard connection that adds Turnitin to the school's learning management system (LMS). Turnitin's LTI 1.3 list includes these platforms:
π Canvas, Blackboard and Moodle
π D2L Brightspace and Sakai
π Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams
Schoology connects through the older LTI 1.1 version. Instructors also get batch scanning, since Turnitin accepts one zip file of up to 1,000 papers per upload.
GPTZero: Self-Serve Plans for Individuals, Teachers, and Schools
GPTZero runs as a public website, so a student can paste a draft without waiting for a teacher. Its free plan needs no credit card, and the paid plans raise the monthly word cap for teachers and departments. The pricing section below compares each plan.
π‘ Can I Check My Paper on Turnitin?
You can see a Turnitin result only when your teacher opens a Turnitin assignment and shares the report. Before that, a public checker such as GPTZero or Phrasly's AI Detector gives you an AI score on your draft.
How Each Tool Scores and Labels Text
Turnitin and GPTZero both use a machine learning classifier, a model trained to separate human text from AI text. Turnitin gives teachers an AI percentage plus a separate plagiarism score, while GPTZero gives anyone a document score with highlighted sentences.
Neither number proves anything on its own, because each one is a probability estimate that a person still has to review.
Turnitin's Similarity Report and AI Writing Indicator
Turnitin shows two separate numbers in most LMS setups: the similarity report and the AI writing indicator. The similarity report, also called the originality report, is the plagiarism checker part of Turnitin. It shows how Turnitin detects plagiarism by matching your paper against three kinds of sources:
π Billions of current and archived web pages
π Periodicals, journals and other publications
π Papers that students submitted to Turnitin before
Turnitin's AI writing guide says the AI writing indicator is "independent of the similarity score." Scores from 1% to 19% show only an asterisk, because Turnitin found more false positives in that range.
Who Can See the AI Writing Report?
The AI writing report goes to teachers by default, and students get it only when the instructor shares it. Turnitin also warns that the score "should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student." Teachers use it as a reason to review a paper, so a flag alone shouldn't lead to a penalty.
π What Turnitin Needs Before It Scores AI Writing
At least 300 words of prose in a long-form format
A .docx, .pdf, .txt or .rtf file
A supported language, such as English, Spanish or German
GPTZero's AI Probability Score and Sentence-Level Highlighting
GPTZero gives every document an overall AI detection score and color-coded sentence-level highlighting. GPTZero works by checking signals such as perplexity and burstiness:
π Perplexity measures how predictable the wording is.
π Burstiness measures how much sentence length and style vary.
Its sentence-by-sentence model then labels the text as human, mixed or AI. On a mixed paper, sentence highlights show a student exactly which paragraphs to revise or cite.
GPTZero's free plan includes one free Advanced Scan with sentence highlights.
We Ran Three Samples Through GPTZero and Phrasly
GPTZero and Phrasly's AI Detector each scanned the same three samples, and Turnitin stayed out of the live test because it has no public access point. Disclosure: Phrasly publishes this comparison and makes its own AI detector.
All three samples cover the same topic, the relief of soldiers drafted "for the emergency" after World War I:
βοΈ Sample 1: a human-written historical passage about relieving A.E.F. soldiers
π€ Sample 2: an unedited ChatGPT passage on the same topic, written in Instant mode
π Sample 3: two paragraphs of the human passage, followed by three sentences ChatGPT wrote to continue it
Each sample got one scan per tool in October 2026. GPTZero ran its Advanced Scan on Model 4.1o, and Phrasly ran Model 7.0 of its AI Detector.
Sample 1: Fully Human-Written Paragraph
GPTZero labeled the human passage 100% Human, and Phrasly scored it 0% AI with none of its 10 sentences flagged. Neither tool produced a false positive on human writing.

Sample 2: Raw AI-Generated Text
GPTZero scored the raw ChatGPT passage 100% AI, and Phrasly scored it 100% AI with all 8 sentences highlighted. Both results match GPTZero's 2023 claim of 0% false negatives, which means no AI text was missed.

Sample 3: Mixed Human and AI Text
GPTZero labeled the mixed sample Mixed and counted 4 of 7 sentences as likely AI, but its free plan hides which sentences those are. Phrasly's highlights covered exactly the three sentences ChatGPT wrote, with both human-written paragraphs left unhighlighted. Phrasly shows these sentence highlights on a free account, so a student can see exactly which sentences to revise.

π‘ Why Phrasly Shows 100% on a Mixed Sample
Phrasly's 100% is a separate estimate for the whole document: any score of 30% or more reads as Likely AI, and 75% or more displays as 100%. The highlights show what the AI wrote, and here they marked only the three sentences from ChatGPT.
Sample | GPTZero (Free Account) | Phrasly (Free Account) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
βοΈ Sample 1: human-written | β Human, 100% Human | β Human, 0% AI (0/10 sentences) | No false positive from either tool |
π€ Sample 2: raw AI text | β AI, 100% AI | β 100% AI (8/8 sentences) | Both caught it, which matches GPTZero's 0% false negative claim |
π Sample 3: mixed human/AI | β οΈ Mixed, 4/7 sentences flagged as AI (3/7 are AI), hides which sentences | β 3/3 ChatGPT-written sentences highlighted, both human paragraphs left unhighlighted | GPTZero's free plan hid the flagged sentences and gave an overall verdict of Mixed, counting one more AI sentence than the sample contains, so we can't tell which sentence it got wrong. Phrasly highlighted the exact AI sentences. |
Tested October 2026 with GPTZero's free plan (Advanced Scan, Model 4.1o) and Phrasly's AI Detector (Model 7.0). One scan per sample per tool.
β οΈ What Three Samples Can and Can't Show
Three samples show how each tool handled one set of texts. Accuracy at scale needs thousands of documents, so the published figures in the next section carry more weight for that question.
Want to see how your own paragraph scores? Paste it into Phrasly's AI Detector and compare the result with GPTZero's. π
Is GPTZero More Accurate Than Turnitin?

GPTZero is more accurate than Turnitin by its own 2023 benchmark, but no independent study has confirmed that result. We found no outside test of GPTZero accuracy in 2026 that ran both tools side by side and published the numbers. Turnitin publishes no overall AI detection accuracy percentage of its own, only false positive rates.
What the 2023 Benchmark Study Found
π GPTZero's November 2023 Benchmark
GPTZero's comparison page lists these results for the GPTZero vs Turnitin accuracy question:
GPTZero: 99% accuracy, 0% false negatives, 2% false positives
Turnitin: 95% accuracy, 8% false negatives, 2% false positives
A false negative rate is the share of AI text a detector misses. GPTZero ran this benchmark itself, so the figures are a self-reported comparison. The page also says its Turnitin data stops in 2023 "due to the closed-source nature of TurnItIn."
Why Turnitin's Closed Model Limits Independent Verification
Researchers can test GPTZero directly through its public website or its research API. Turnitin has no public API or self-serve access, so an outside team needs a school partnership to test it. That gap leaves most Turnitin accuracy claims checkable only against Turnitin's own reports.
AcademicHelp's review scored Turnitin's AI detection at 42/50 against GPTZero's 11.67/50, the reverse of GPTZero's benchmark, which shows how much results depend on who runs the test. The site doesn't publish its sample size or test texts, so its scores work as an editorial opinion rather than test data.
GPTZero vs Turnitin False Positive Rate and ESL Bias
Turnitin and GPTZero can both flag human writing as AI by mistake. Each company says its false positive rate stays at about 1% for full documents. A false positive rate is the share of human writing that a detector wrongly labels as AI.
Reported False Positive Rates for Each Tool
The published GPTZero vs Turnitin false positive figures come from the two companies, and each source measures something slightly different:
Source | Turnitin | GPTZero |
|---|---|---|
Turnitin's own figures (2023) | Under 1% per document with 20%+ AI writing; about 4% per sentence | β Not reported |
GPTZero's benchmark (Nov 2023) | 2% | 2% |
GPTZero's technology page | β Not reported | No more than 1% |
GPTZero's own pages list two figures for itself, so check which page a quoted rate comes from. Our breakdown of why Turnitin's AI detector flags human writing covers the causes behind Turnitin's false flags.
Why ESL Writers Get Flagged More Often
π Stanford HAI, 2023
Seven widely used AI detectors labeled 61% of TOEFL essays by non-native English writers as AI-generated, according to Stanford HAI. The study tested 2023-era detectors, so the figure describes detectors in general rather than today's Turnitin or GPTZero.
ESL writing often uses simpler sentences and a smaller range of words. Detectors read that predictable wording as low perplexity, the same signal they link to AI text. This ESL student bias matters most for multilingual students, who have the least room to argue a flag.
What Does Turnitin Say About ESL Bias?
Turnitin's 2023 research found no statistically significant bias against English language learners on documents of 300 words or more. Shorter documents showed a bigger gap. GPTZero says it de-biased its model for ESL writers, and it reports a 1.1% false positive rate on TOEFL essays.
What Students Are Saying on Reddit
Students on Reddit describe both tools flagging their own writing, and in each case the student's draft history, or the lack of one, became the main evidence.
π A student on the University of North Texas subreddit said a professor's Turnitin check marked their essay 100% AI. The student had Google Docs version history and search-history screenshots to show the work was their own.
π A student on r/CollegeRant said GPTZero scored two midterm essays at 100% AI and a third at 84%. They write formally and without grammar mistakes, and they had no version history from the timed exam.
π A teacher on r/Teachers reported three essays at 95% or higher from a detection tool. All three turned out to be false positives, because the students had drafts and peer review comments.
Forum posts describe individual cases, so they show a pattern in student experience without measuring how often false flags happen.
Pricing: What Turnitin and GPTZero Actually Cost
Turnitin has no public price because it sells only to schools, while GPTZero lists its plans online, starting with a free tier. A school's IT or academic integrity office requests a Turnitin quote. That's why GPTZero vs Turnitin pricing searches rarely return a Turnitin number for individuals.
Turnitin: Institutional Licensing Only
π« Students and individual teachers have no signup option and no public price list.
π« Turnitin says pricing depends on "the size and requirements of your institution," and a sales representative sends a quote. Our guide to Turnitin's AI detection pricing covers what schools report paying.
π« The AI writing report needs a Turnitin Originality license on top of standard plagiarism checking.
GPTZero: Individual and Classroom Plans
GPTZero is free for low volume, and heavier use needs a subscription. The free plan scans up to 10,000 words a month. A teacher grading 30 essays of 1,000 words each uses 30,000 words, which is three times the free cap.
Plan | Billed Annually | Billed Monthly | Words per Month |
|---|---|---|---|
Turnitin (institution only) | Custom quote through the school | Custom quote through the school | Set by the school's contract |
GPTZero Free | $0 | $0 | 10,000 |
GPTZero Premium | $12.99/month | $23.99/month | 300,000 |
GPTZero Professional | $24.99/month | $45.99/month | 500,000 |
GPTZero Professional Team (2-seat minimum) | $24.99/month per seat | Shown on checkout | 500,000 per member |
Prices checked on GPTZero's pricing page and Turnitin's own pages in October 2026. Product prices can change, so confirm them on each tool's pricing page before you buy.
Privacy, Data Retention and FERPA Compliance

Turnitin and GPTZero both say they comply with FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act that protects US student records. The bigger difference is who controls the text: your school controls what happens to a Turnitin submission, while you decide what goes into GPTZero.
How Turnitin Handles Student Data
π Turnitin acts as a "School Official" under FERPA, so your data falls under your school's privacy agreement.
π Instructors choose whether papers go into the standard paper repository, which future submissions get matched against, or into no repository.
π Turnitin can't process deletion requests from students, so your school's Turnitin administrator handles them.
A student whose school requires Turnitin submission has no separate consumer contract to accept or refuse. The school's academic integrity policy decides how the reports get used.
How GPTZero Handles Submitted Text
π GPTZero says it is SOC 2 Type II compliant and follows FERPA.
π It keeps a copy of text scanned in its dashboard and uses that data "in aggregate" to improve the service, but it says it never shows your text to third parties and you keep ownership of it.
π Its privacy policy says it keeps personal information, including submitted text, no longer than three months after an account closes.
π It doesn't store documents sent through its API access by default or use them for product improvement.
π Users can access and delete their own information.
A student who pastes a draft into GPTZero chooses to share it, which differs from a class where the school mandates the tool. Read the live privacy policy before you upload an unpublished dissertation or a sensitive draft.
Turnitin vs GPTZero vs Copyleaks: Where a Third Detector Fits
Copyleaks fits as a second check on a paper that Turnitin already flagged. Many teachers compare three tools at once when they choose a detection setup. Copyleaks lists integrations with Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and other LMS platforms, so a school can run it together with Turnitin.
When Schools Add Copyleaks Alongside Turnitin
A second detector lowers the risk of acting on one tool's false positive before an academic integrity meeting. It also adds a second bill and a second workflow, so a school needs a clear reason to run both.
How Copyleaks Compares on Accuracy and Price
Copyleaks publishes its own accuracy claims, which are vendor figures like the others in this guide. Winston AI is another detector that teachers weigh against GPTZero, and our Winston AI vs GPTZero comparison runs both on the same three samples.
Which Detector Should You Use? A Decision Table for Students and Teachers

To double-check a paper before it goes through Turnitin, run it through a self-serve detector such as Phrasly's AI Detector first. Students can't open Turnitin, so a public tool is the only way to see a score before the stakes become institutional.
The accuracy evidence splits by who ran the test:
β GPTZero's own benchmark favors GPTZero.
β AcademicHelp's editorial scores favor Turnitin.
β οΈ The Stanford ESL findings apply to detectors in general, and they matter for multilingual students and the teachers grading them.
If You Are a Student Checking Your Own Paper
Run a pre-check before you submit, and treat any single score as a signal to review. A high score tells you which sentences to rewrite or cite. Our list of the best Turnitin alternatives compares more self-serve checkers for a second opinion.
If You Are a Teacher Grading Submissions
π Teacher Use of AI Detectors
More than 40% of surveyed 6th- to 12th-grade teachers used AI detection tools during the 2024-25 school year, according to a Center for Democracy & Technology poll reported by NPR.
Before you penalize a student, weigh a Turnitin flag against the documented ESL false positive risk and the student's drafts. Phrasly's own detection report gives the same advice and tells teachers not to use it alone to penalize a writer.
GPTZero's Writing Report adds draft evidence through its Origin Chrome extension. It replays how a Google Doc was written and marks large pastes. These writing transparency features give you a record that a score alone can't provide. For a full class, GPTZero's Professional plan scans up to 250 files at once.
Best AI Detector for Teachers in 2026
The best AI detector for teachers in 2026 depends on the job. Turnitin fits institutional record-keeping with plagiarism and AI results in one report. GPTZero or Phrasly fits fast, affordable spot-checks.
Role | Primary Need | Recommended Tool | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
π Student, pre-submission check | Catch false positives or raw AI phrasing before handing in work | Phrasly AI Detector | Self-serve, with no institutional account needed |
π Teacher, classroom grading | Fast spot-checks across many submissions | GPTZero (Premium or Professional) | Published plans scale to class size, with 300,000 words a month on Premium |
ποΈ Institution, academic integrity office | Formal records and LMS integration | Turnitin | Institutional license that connects to existing integrity workflows |
π ESL student or multilingual program | Fewer wrongful AI flags | Phrasly pre-check plus human review | Stanford found detectors flagged 61% of TOEFL essays in 2023 |
π° Budget-conscious teacher | Value for money | GPTZero | Scored 20/25 on value for money against Turnitin's 10/25 in AcademicHelp's review |
Plan details checked on each tool's own pages in October 2026. Plans and prices can change, so check the vendor's page before buying.

FAQs
Does GPTZero Work With Turnitin?
GPTZero doesn't connect to Turnitin. They are separate, competing products. Students and writers usually run GPTZero as a self-check before submitting, while schools run Turnitin inside their LMS. A GPTZero scan never feeds into or syncs with a Turnitin report, so your teacher sees only Turnitin's own result.
Does Turnitin Detect GPTZero-Flagged Content?
Turnitin doesn't read GPTZero's scores or flags. It runs its own AI writing detection model with its own thresholds. The same paper can get different verdicts from each tool. A high GPTZero score doesn't guarantee a matching Turnitin result, and a low score doesn't guarantee a clean one.
What AI Detector Does Turnitin Use?
Turnitin uses its own in-house AI writing detection model instead of a licensed tool like GPTZero, and it publishes no model name. Its model page lists regular updates, including detection of text rewritten by AI humanizer tools from August 2025 and an English model update in October 2026.
Can Turnitin Detect AI Writing Accurately?
Turnitin catches raw, unedited AI text well by its own measures, with a false positive rate under 1% for documents with 20% or more AI writing. Accuracy drops on paraphrased or heavily edited text, as it does for most detectors. No detector proves 100% accuracy, so Turnitin's score should support an instructor's judgment.
Which AI Detector Do Teachers Use the Most, Turnitin or GPTZero?
Turnitin has the broader classroom reach, because schools bundle it into LMS licenses they already pay for. Its homepage counts more than 16,000 partner institutions. Individual teachers and students more often choose GPTZero for spot-checks. Neither company publishes market share, and our Copyleaks vs GPTZero breakdown covers another detector schools use.
