That split explains a common surprise. A QuillBot paraphrase can score low on similarity and high on AI at the same time, because the wording no longer matches sources but the text still began as AI output.
📅 What Changed in 2026
On August 4, 2026, Turnitin simplified its English AI report. The old two-color view, with blue for AI-generated text and purple for AI-generated text that was also AI-paraphrased, became a single set of blue highlights. Turnitin says the report still detects AI text that paraphrasers or bypassers have modified. Many guides, including some that rank today, still describe the purple category.
Can Turnitin Detect QuillBot Paraphrasing?
Yes, if the original text was written by AI. QuillBot’s Paraphraser changes words and sentence order, but Turnitin’s English AI report is designed to recognize AI text even after that kind of rewording. QuillBot itself describes the Paraphraser as a tool for “clarity, tone, and style,” not a way to avoid AI detection. Your own writing is a different case.
So does QuillBot get detected? It depends on where the text started:

Does Turnitin detect paraphrasing in general? Two different checks are involved. The similarity report looks for wording that matches sources, so heavy paraphrasing can lower those matches.

Why Is QuillBot Still Detectable?
Because rewording changes the surface of an AI draft, not its core. QuillBot swaps words and rearranges sentences, but the ideas, order and overall shape of the draft can stay the same.
AI detectors look for statistical patterns rather than specific words, so those patterns can survive, and results can vary between tools and between runs.
📢 QuillBot also does more than swap synonyms. Its editor marks “Structural Changes” where the sentence structure “was rearranged or clauses were altered,” so the output can look quite different from the source while still carrying an AI draft’s structure.
Can Turnitin Detect QuillBot Humanizer?
Yes. QuillBot Humanizer is detectable by Turnitin when the draft began as AI output, because a humanizing pass changes the wording, not where the text came from. QuillBot’s own help center says the Humanizer “does not try to trick AI detectors or promise undetectability.” Our test skipped the Humanizer, so treat online Humanizer “pass rates” with caution.
QuillBot Humanizer does not work on Turnitin as a way to hide AI writing, because it is not built for that. Smoother wording can make a draft easier to read, but Turnitin’s English report is designed to look past that kind of change.
No tool can promise how Turnitin will score a draft.

My Experience With QuillBot: Our Original Test
We ran one QuillBot paraphrase through Phrasly AI Detector, not Turnitin, and the details below show what that result can and cannot tell you.
We followed four steps:
Content Generation: We asked ChatGPT for a short guide to using Bitcoin, so the starting text was known to be AI-written.
Using QuillBot: We pasted most of that answer into QuillBot’s Paraphraser. It replaced words with synonyms and also rearranged parts of sentences.
Testing With Phrasly AI Detector: We checked the paraphrased text with Phrasly AI Detector to see whether the changes hid its AI origin.
Analysis of Results: Phrasly AI Detector scored the text 100% AI, with all 9 sentences flagged.

So in this one case, rewording with QuillBot was not enough to stop Phrasly AI Detector from reading the text as AI. The result says nothing about what Turnitin would have reported, and it does not measure how accurate any detector or QuillBot version is today.
Can QuillBot's or Phrasly's Detector Predict Your Turnitin Score?
No. A score from QuillBot’s AI Detector or Phrasly AI Detector is that tool’s own estimate, and Turnitin runs a different model with its own thresholds, so neither can forecast your Turnitin result. Use an outside detector as a second opinion while you revise, and treat Turnitin’s report as a separate check.
That is also why QuillBot and Turnitin are not the same, even when both flag a passage. Each detector learns from different training data and sets its own cutoffs, so the same essay can get a high score in one tool and a low score in another.

What Does an Asterisk (*%) Mean on a Turnitin AI Score?
It means Turnitin found an AI share between 1% and 19%. In that range, it shows no number and no highlights because false positives are more likely. It is not an all-clear, and no AI percentage is universally safe.
Does Turnitin Check QuillBot-Edited Text in Every Language?
No. Turnitin’s AI report supports English, Spanish, Japanese and Arabic, but only its English detector covers AI text changed by paraphrasing or bypasser tools. In every language, the report needs at least 300 words of long-form prose.
