What is Winston AI?

Winston AI is an AI content detection tool that estimates whether written content was generated by artificial intelligence or written by a person. The Winston AI checker is designed for students, educators, writers, publishers, and teams that need to review content for possible AI involvement.

Winston analyzes the writing and provides a Human Score that indicates how likely the text is to be human-written. It can also highlight sentences that the system considers more likely to be AI-generated, giving users more detail than a single overall score.

How We Tested Winston AI 

We tested Winston AI on September 9, 2026, using the same eight writing samples that we also checked with Phrasly’s AI Detector. The test included two genuine human samples, three raw AI samples, one AI-polished human draft, and two mixed human-AI samples.

Detector Version: v4.18 

Each sample was over 300 words. The raw AI samples were generated using ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, while the mixed and AI-polished samples combined human and AI-written content at different proportions.

We recorded Winston’s Human Score and compared each result with the sample’s known ground truth.

We classified clear human and raw-AI results as correct or incorrect. Mixed and AI-polished samples were reported separately because they cannot always be judged reliably as simply human or AI.

How Winston AI Works

Winston AI detector analyzes a piece of writing and assigns it a Human Score, which estimates how likely the text is to have been written by a person rather than generated by AI. I

t can also highlight individual sentences that its system considers more likely to be AI generated, giving you more detail than the overall score alone.

You can submit text from a website, essay, or document for analysis. Winston AI looks for patterns in the writing that may be associated with AI generated content and uses those patterns to produce its score.

Winston AI can also check text for plagiarism, which is a separate process from AI detection. AI detection estimates whether content may have been generated by AI, while plagiarism checking looks for matching or copied material.

Winston AI Image Detector

Winston AI’s Image Detector analyzes images to estimate whether they were created by AI or a human. It provides separate AI and Human probabilities and can also surface image metadata such as EXIF, IPTC, C2PA, and ICC information.

Winston offers both Basic and Advanced image scans, with Advanced scans adding deeper forensic analysis.

Our 8-Image Test

To see how Winston performed in practice, we ran a small 8-image test on September 10, 2026 using Winston Image Origin v5.0. The test included 4 genuine photographs and 4 AI-generated images. We recorded the result shown by Winston for each image.

What We Found

Winston correctly identified 7 of 8 images in our mini-test. It correctly classified all 4 AI-generated images, while 3 of 4 genuine photographs were identified as human.

The main issue was Real Image 2, which Winston classified as 54% AI and 46% Human even though it was a genuine photograph. That gives our small test a 12.5% false-positive rate among the eight images tested.

These results should not be treated as a general accuracy benchmark. Winston itself notes that factors such as image resolution, compression, editing, and metadata can affect image detection results.

Bottom line: Winston performed well on the four AI images we tested, but the false positive on one real photograph shows why an image detector result should be treated as an indication rather than conclusive proof of an image’s origin.

Is Winston AI Accurate? Our 2026 Test Results

Independent research also shows why AI-polished writing can be difficult for detectors to classify reliably. The APT-Eval study found that AI detectors frequently flagged even minimally AI-polished text as AI-generated, highlighting the challenge of distinguishing lightly edited human writing from AI-generated content.

What The Results Show

Winston performed well on clearly human and clearly AI-written samples. It classified both genuine human samples as 100% Human and all three raw-AI samples as 100% AI.

In this small test, that means it correctly classified 5 out of 5 clear cases.

The results were less consistent when the writing contained a mixture of human and AI-generated content. One mixed sample received a 100% Human score from Winston, while Phrasly classified the same sample as 70% AI.

Our 25% human and 75% AI sample received a 0% Human score from Winston, showing that heavily AI-weighted mixed writing was easier for it to classify.

The AI-polished sample also received a 0% Human score from Winston. This suggests that light AI editing can still leave detectable patterns, but our small test cannot establish how Winston will perform across all types of edited writing.

What About Winston's 99.98% Accuracy Claim?

Winston advertises 99.98% accuracy for its AI detector. That is a vendor claim, not a result from our test. Our eight-sample test was much smaller and was designed to show how the detector behaves on different types of real-world writing, not to reproduce a laboratory accuracy benchmark.

Winston performed strongly on obvious human and raw-AI writing in our test, but mixed and AI-polished content produced less predictable results. A detector score should therefore be treated as an indication, not conclusive proof that a person used AI.

False Positives: Did Winston Flag Human Writing? 

In our test, Winston correctly classified 2 out of 2 genuine human samples as 100% Human. One was a genuine human-written piece about remote work, while the other discussed how social media affects college students’ sleep.

A student should not be accused of using AI based only on a detector score. If a result looks questionable, checking the same passage with a second detector can provide additional context. How Long Does Winston AI Keep Your Data?

If you delete a Winston AI report, the associated text or images can take up to 30 days to be removed from active storage. Winston says encrypted backups may retain deleted content for up to 90 additional days. This means Winston is not a zero-retention detector, so users should consider its policy before uploading sensitive documents. 

How Does Phrasly Handle Your Data?

Phrasly says its AI Detector processes submitted text securely and deletes it immediately after analysis. The detector also says no account is required for basic checking. These are Phrasly's own product claims, so they should be presented as vendor-provided information rather than independent evidence of its data practices.

Bottom line: Winston AI is not inherently unsafe, but it does retain submitted content while reports exist and can keep deleted content in backups for a limited period. If immediate deletion is a priority, Phrasly says its detector deletes submitted text after analysis.

Winston AI and Turnitin both detect likely AI-generated content, but they are designed for different users and use cases. Turnitin’s AI Writing Report supports English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic prose within its 300 to 30,000-word requirements. Which Is More Accurate?

Neither Winston AI nor Turnitin can be declared universally more accurate based on their published percentages alone. Their accuracy claims come from different testing methods and datasets. Our Winston test also was not a head-to-head Turnitin test, so it cannot establish that one detector is more accurate than the other.

For individual users, Winston offers direct access, while Turnitin is a more natural fit for schools and universities already using its institutional system. Neither detector's score should be treated as conclusive proof that a student used AI.
