To understand where the strongest opportunities actually exist, we analyzed 1332 available job postings with AI-related titles across all 50 states, adjusted salaries for cost of living, and mapped out which roles employers are most desperate to fill. 

The results paint a picture that is part expected, part surprising. Yes, California still leads the way. But some of the best financial opportunities for AI workers are hiding in places you probably wouldn’t guess. And while everyone is talking about the dreaded return to office, remote work showed up in the top five “locations” for AI hiring.

Here’s a closer look at how the AI job market is evolving, where the biggest opportunities lie, and what job seekers should know as the field continues to explode.

The Golden State is dominating the field with 335 open AI roles, nearly twice as many as any other state. This practically cements California as the unofficial HQ of U.S. artificial intelligence.

But right behind it is a surprise. Virginia claims the number-two spot with 175 open positions, driven largely by defense, federal agencies, and tech-adjacent industries that are rapidly expanding their AI capabilities. For a state known more for its national landmarks than neural networks, Virginia’s rise shows just how quickly AI has infiltrated government and infrastructure sectors.

New York and Texas follow closely behind, and then comes an unexpected competitor: remote roles. Yes, even amid talk of returning to the office, AI employers are clearly willing to hire nationally. Remote listings rank in the top five “locations,” proving that the AI workforce remains one of the most flexible in the modern economy.

Best States for AI Earning Power

The best financial opportunities for AI workers aren’t always in the places with the tallest skyscrapers. When we adjust salaries for cost of living, the leaders look very different.

Oregon lands in the number-one spot with an adjusted midpoint salary of $207,000. Even though its cost of living runs a bit higher, compensation rises even faster, giving Oregon the strongest overall salary advantage in the country.

Then come some more unexpected overachievers. Kansas, Idaho, and Alabama all place near the top thanks to competitive salaries paired with much lower daily expenses. Both Kansas and Alabama benefit from cost-of-living scores under 90, meaning paychecks stretch significantly further than they would in coastal metros.

Altogether, Midwestern and Mountain West states take up much of the top 10, signaling that professionals looking for strong earning power and a more affordable lifestyle may find the best balance far away from the traditional tech hubs.

The Roles Powering the AI Workforce

Regardless of where these openings appear, one trend stands out: companies are overwhelmingly hiring builders. AI Engineer tops the list with 239 open roles, and its lead is enormous. At 239 openings, AI Engineer nearly matches the combined total of the next three roles (115 Engineers, 101 Machine Learning Engineers, and 43 Software Engineers, a trio that adds up to 259). The message from employers is unmistakable: the AI job market is still in heavy build mode, and technical execution is the priority.

Engineering-centric roles dominate the rankings across the board. After the top four, Data Scientist lands in fifth place with 39 openings, reinforcing that strong analytics foundations remain essential in an AI-driven hiring landscape. Research Engineer (16 openings), Architect (18), Developer (17), and Consultant (12) round out the mid-tier roles, showing a continued need for specialists who can support model design, deployment, and optimization.

Meanwhile, leadership and strategy roles barely register. Product Manager appears only four times, Manager just twice, and Specialist twice. These slim numbers highlight that companies aren’t yet hiring layers of oversight or managerial infrastructure. They are still focused on execution, experimentation, and rapid deployment. In this chapter of AI hiring, action beats abstraction. The emphasis is firmly on builders, coders, and hands-on technical problem-solvers.

Methodology 

To identify the top locations for AI job opportunities and earning potential, we conducted a nationwide analysis of all 50 U.S. states using publicly available data sources. AI job availability was determined using open job postings from Indeed, capturing roles that included titles or descriptions related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and adjacent engineering specialties. States with zero qualifying AI openings at the time of analysis included: Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

To assess spending power for AI employees, we paired state-level midpoint salary data for AI roles with each state’s cost of living index, sourced from World Population Review. Adjusted salary values were calculated by comparing midpoint earnings with local cost-of-living scores to determine where wages stretch the furthest. All data reflects a snapshot in time and may shift as hiring activity and economic conditions evolve.
